Past Mission Threads / cbss-scrap-smith-mission / Weather Station Repair
Avatar
The Scrap Smiths rely on a nearby weather station to keep the local green belt verdant and the rains coming on time. That water is collected here in the mountains and is set aside for both drinking, by those that need to, and for other industrial processes that require it. The green belts are all that remains of a working eco system on this world, and are both the last and best hope of life ever reaching something toward sustainable here again. Marvels of pre-scream technology, they no longer function nearly as flawlessly as they once did, each requiring skilled labor, hard to find materials, and brilliant jury rigging to keep them going for just days or weeks longer. The one closest to the mountain Ajax lives on has once again fallen into disarray and he is planning on sending a team out to explore.

"I don't miss out on fun generally, but I also DO steal APC's if the need arises anyways, so.... not much luck on the check keeping scenario, I'm afraid. I'm going to have Boots patrol the area," he says as the goat quietly walks out into the greenery around them. "Being prey has the advantages of better sight and smell than us, probably, I don't actually know. I just assume that every animal has better senses than I, because I don't make sense." He looks up at the massive weather machine in awe. "I have never seen anything from before the scream. Do either of y'all know how to fix stuff like this or did they... give us a manual or something, damn?" (edited)

Scrap Smith Ajax has provided a general use toolkit with parts that commonly break within the machine , as well as the use of their flyer for transport to the site. Each of you has been chosen for your technical expertise and he seems to think that your innate abilities should be able to figure things out from there.

Assembling on the tarmac, you can see the equipment being loaded by the scrap smith's men, most of them far more cybernetic than the original humans that made them up. They have little to say, aside from trying to politely move out of your way when you approach.
Avatar
Vanon Talenar 4/26/2022 1:06 PM
Attempting a few times to get some more detailed specs from the workers, Vanon eventually gives up and just starts digging through the parts as they're loaded to try to get a general inventory of what they'll have available for the repairs. "Looks like we're going to have our work cut out for us. Though I'm sure all the basic principles apply - these weather machines got to have engines of some sort, right?"
Avatar
Dimitri Tucachavski/Bedlam 4/26/2022 6:21 PM
Dimitri will take try to talk to a few about the cybernetics they have, showing his as well if needed, though eventually giving up to help with the inventory. “I mean maybe? I’ve seen some pretty innovative stuff. When I was on Ploycronolou I heard about working nanofabs. I don’t even know how they work let alone operate. Hopefully theses engines are simpler.” (edited)
Avatar
"Well, I'm excited to see the guts of that thing, for sure, even if I don't know how to help. We'll figure it out," he says, climbing up on to the flyer and taking a seat, not caring about what cybernetics the smiths have at all. Feeling pretty good. "You guys ready, yet?" he teases.

"ALL ABOARD! Chugga chugga chugga chugga chugga chugga chugga CHOO CHOO!" Styx howls at the sky like a coyote and then hears Vanon's question and turns to face him. "Who, Boots? He goes everywhere I go and I do plenty of flying! Though, admittedly, I mostly fly in space," He stops to think for a moment. "Yea he'll be fine, won't you, boy? Who's a good boy?" The ramp doors close behind you, and the hiss of pressure is equalized to keep you comfortable while the vehicle sails through the high altitude thin air on the way to the site. From up there, any local surface to air defenses will be unable to track or target you. The ghost driver begins the take off process and you can see through armored windows that you are beginning to rise. Powerful engines begin gathering power to propel you forward, into the mid-day sky. The weather is clear for the moment and as you gain altitude you see many localized rain pockets and green belts on the horizon, along with one massive disturbance that looks to be something of a miniature hurricane. This appears to be your destination- to the weather station at it's heart.

Vanon Talenar 4/28/2022 7:54 PM
Vanon looks on in astonishment as they approach. "Huh, right into the eye of the storm. Glad I'm not flying this thing. I wish we knew if that hurricane is normal or not, but it appears that the weather station is at least somewhat functional."

(Alright I'm posting right now. Sorry for the delay, but it looks like we're all feeling the weekend ahead. Hope all is well.)

Styx stands in terror at our approach into a storm he's actually never really seen the like of. He looks around and sees other nervous faces. "I'm sure we'll be fine, right? This nonexistent driver we got knows what they're doing probably right?" Styx takes a moment to use his effort and look as far into the future as he can see, asking what dangers lie ahead once they arrive at the weather machine. As usual, he also adds that if any future lottery numbers have wandered into the ether, it'd cool to know them.

You see robotic guardians at the weather control station though in your vision they are not attacking. The future is too complex as you ponder this question to know if they will remain inactive, but you can tell you will not be fired at upon landing- leaving the storm as the primary danger.

"Good to know. We should take care to not trigger any security systems." Vanon turns away from the view out the window and looks at Styx as though re-evaluating him. "That gift of yours is quite handy...I'm glad you're here with us."
Avatar
Styx nods quietly. "Thank you. I am glad to be here. My father also had this... gift. I never thought of it as that, just an ability to see what is already there, though it took me a long time to learn and it has saved me countless times.... I still do not understand why it didn't save my father, but I will understand that some day." He stares at the metal underneath them for a few long moments and then sets his eyes on the storm.

Vanon Talenar 5/3/2022 12:08 AM
Vanon wordlessly claps him on the shoulder and after a moment says quietly, "you know, there isn't always a reason...but I hope you do find that one day." And with a final pat, Vanon leaves Styx to watch the storm and begins to prep his equipment for their arrival.

The forward stabilizer and one of the two elevators is torn off by heavy wind. Alarms begin to sound in the cockpit as rain pelts the windshield like a hail of a thousand bullets. In the crew bay, everything not secured hurtles down the hold towards the raised ramp, and up front Vanon fights with the controls, unable to stop the descent but enough to keep the craft from flipping over to collide with the ground , which would certainly kill you all. The ground approaches quickly, you see wind swept pines and long grasses waving in the wind as the ship levels off and its firey descent has it crashing through the closest of the pines. The drop ship digs its own grave, with all of you inside its protective armored box. Surfaces designed to crush or compact do so , keeping you safe inside.

"Well, hey, I guess that could have been worse. Thanks for trying there, Vanon. I feel fine actually. Not sure what I was worried about now. Oh man, anyone got an extra poncho in their pack?" He asks as water begins to drip on his head, shoulders and thighs. (edited)

Vanon pats himself down, hands shaking a bit now that the danger has past, somewhat astonished that he's still all in one piece. Unstrapping from his seat and groaning as he gets up, he turns to Styx and Dimitri. "Never again. Never in a hurricane."

Dimitri Tucachavski/Bedlam 5/4/2022 10:34 AM
Dimitri locked in sits white knuckled, he puts his helmet on as the rain starts to whip across his face. “I’m gonna hire a pilot. His sole job is gonna be making sure stuff stops blowing up.” He hits the release on the harness and stands up, surveying the damage and checking the toolkit. “Please don’t be broken.”
Avatar
The tools are in good working order, made to be robust by the industrious locals and you should be able to carry them the rest of the way
Avatar
Vanon Talenar 5/5/2022 9:29 PM
Seeing the tools are looking ok, Vanon starts gathering up as much of the spare parts as he can carry, selecting parts at random and strapped or shoving them to his pack as he can. "Might as well grab as much as we can now, this probably won't be a fun trek into the station." Then starts to see what they can spot from there and if there's anything that might impede their trip to the station.
Avatar
The weather conditions remain bad but the wind seems to be slowly dying off. The rain will stick around for probably most of your trek there. The tools are survivable and portable, and the spare parts were going to be waiting for you at the station already from a previous supply mission. It seems that the weather and the wilderness between here and there are your main concerns for the moment. Surely the smiths have noticed the loss of contact with their flyer, but any kind of rescue mission is also going to be grounded until the storm passes to prevent the situation from getting worse.
Avatar
Dimitri Tucachavski/Bedlam 5/6/2022 11:13 AM
Helping gather everything up Dimitri looks between the three of them. As they exit into the rain and wind. “Let’s get going. Rescue isn’t coming I imagine for a while. We should link. Up with the weather station.”
Avatar
You find your rain gear is enough to keep the worst of it off you and the nav comp included with the tools still works. You have a kilometer or so walk west to the weather station and should be able to take advantage of tree cover for the second half of your journey there.
Avatar
"We almost made it even! Not too bad. We can knock this out in no time," he says as he takes a peak at the navcomp. He gathers his things and cleans off his weapons.
Avatar
Vanon Talenar 5/7/2022 11:44 AM
"Yes, let's try and make good time. It seems the worst of the storm is dying off but who knows how long that will last."

Heading into the rain and wind swept plains you can see the faint outlines of the blinking red lights on the comms tower of the facility. Sparks and another faint blue glow accompany it, and it is evident something is happening there that is spreading and impeding the smooth operation of the facility

“That doesn’t look good, let’s fix this thing and get out of here before a tornado whips up.” While walking he will see if he can identify any signs of electrical anomalies around it using his pan spectral optics.
Avatar
Some sort of electrical fire has begun at the facility. You're not sure the severity of it, but do see arcing current heading skyward from places it is not supposed to be.
Avatar
Vanon Talenar 5/9/2022 3:46 PM
"Hopefully there'll still be something to fix by the time we get there." Vanon continues to march forward, holding his hand up trying to shield against the rain as he squints at the vague outline of the tower. "But we're getting close it seems."
Avatar
"Double time, comrades. Let's go fix this clear electrical hazard. Totally safe!" He says, breaking into a sprint.
Avatar
Entering the woods you are able to keep your path straight due to Dimitri being able to see the electrical discharge ahead of you, acting as some kind of compass. At the treeline, you can see automated firefighting protocols are underway, and the maintainer bots are struggling to contain the damage. A blackened doorway large enough to drive a truck through is open, leading into the facility where you can see the hungry orange and red of roaring flames.
7:23 AM
The dome itself stretches high into the storm, with the rain lashing down keeping any fire reaching the roof suppressed. Clouds of gray steam pour off it, forming a second, artificial layer of cloud. The air smells of burned rubber and dirty electronics, cooking off one by one in their irreplicable cradles inside.

Dimitri Tucachavski/Bedlam 5/10/2022 10:39 AM
“Ugh what do we do? Anyone have equipment to fight this fire.” He looks around the building looking for something to fight this fire with or if he can even get in the building to try to help reroute the electricity to kill off this fire.

(coming in from the north)
9:28 AM
Entering the large machine bay you can see that there are rooms behind a blast door to the left, and an open machine bay to the right where most of the fire seems to be coming from. Coolants, greases, and other flammable materials have been stored here in barrels and it looks like the nozzles of the fire suppression system fused shut due to the heat and only a cursory amount of suppressant foam was released before failure. You can see the scorched remains of maintainer eyebots littering the floor, burn marks forming a scarring on what remains of their plating.

Vanon Talenar 5/18/2022 10:06 PM
Vanon shields himself as best he can from the oppressive heat as he follows in after. He raises his voice to be heard over the roar of the flames and destruction. "You all see those nozzles? We get those back open, maybe we can get this fire under control a bit." (are those within reach somehow without wading through the flames? I'm thinking just grabbing the biggest hammer I can from the toolkit and going to town on it)

The blow is poorly aimed and you manage to get a few drips out, but the nozzle remains just twisted and mangled, and not severed. You do however confirm that the system still has pressurized water in it, and should work if the nozzles can be removed somehow.
Avatar
Styx pulls his laser rifle out and takes aim at one of the closed nozzles over the fire then takes the shot. (edited)
Avatar
The shot pinches the vitrified end of the nozzle off, and water begins to jettison out. This release of pressure triggers the other nozzles, and the air is filled with a humid, ionized water spray. Smoke and steam begin filling the space as the flames are slowly put out, revealing blackened metal, twisted machinery, and broken wiring and pipes underneath as they recede.

A skill challenge is an action scene: an adrenaline-fueled dash to the finish line. Whether that’s fleeing a T-Rex, escaping a whirlpool, or finding shelter from zealous guards, skill challenges are opportunities for excitement, tension, and quick thinking. As the name suggests, skill challenges are trials that the characters can overcome through the judicious use of skills—from Athletics to Survival, carpenter’s tools, vehicle expertise, and more. By using class features, special equipment, racial attributes, or spells, the characters can boost their chances of overcoming dangerous complications that obstruct their path forward—or else fall into failure. PC describes what they will do to address the complication. If the DM accepts this proposal as feasible and reasonable, the Active PC’s turn begins. As in combat, the Active PC can use an action, a bonus action, and an environmental interaction. Each measure taken can help the Active PC overcome the complication (see “The Skill Check” below). For example, they might cast a spell, shove a creature, throw an object, or use a tool. Each skill or ability can only be used by the group one time, so if someone makes a survive check for example, that is the group's best attempt at using that skill in the situation, even if it fails. We need to get five successes before we reach three failures to complete the scene, and after each check, pass or fail, the scene will change a bit.

You notice that more than anything, the mechanism used to seed the atmosphere to produce rain has been destroyed by the fire. Most of the wiring within the area, no matter what system it controls, has also been entirely melted away and is useless to do much of anything now. You do see enough spares between what you brought, and what has been spared by the raging fire in the supply dump.
